FOOD REVIEW – THE AGE – MAY 2012 London’s loss is our gain as St Kilda gets a taste of regal fare

At the well-mannered end of Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, opposite Albert Park, Fitzrovia has risen from the ashes of the Waldorf Diner. Gregarious new owners Marco Pugnaloni and Paul Jewson (who is also head chef) moved in a little less than a year ago, tszujed the place up and renamed it Fitzrovia, after the central London neighbourhood they lived in during the ’90s. Jewson, who has worked at London’s River Cafe, has created an all-day menu that, like Fitzrovia’s revamped interior, is fashionably rustic.

Making the most of Melbourne’s last few sunny days, we decided to head down to St Kilda for a walk and brunch. Initially the plan was Galleon, but alas all the outside seats were taken so we walked over to Fitzroy St in search of food. Thankfully we stumbled upon Fitzrovia.

Fitzrovia prides itself on using good quality, locally sourced produce (think St Ali coffee, Tatura butter, Sth Gippsland eggs, herbs from a community garden in Caulfield.) Both its menu, and the food presented on the counter inside looked stunning. These folk are clearly passionate about food!…

BLOG – GOURMET CHICK – MAY 2012

The dilemma with Fitzrovia is whether to go there for brunch so you can have the excellent cured Tasmanian ocean trout or for dinner so you can order the truffled polenta chips. These are the decidedly first world problems that I have to deal with in my life. For those who haven’t come across it yet Fitzrovia has opened down the more chi-chi end of Fitzroy street overlooking Albert Park.The name is a reference to the street but Londoners will also recognise it as a nod to the area near Soho where chef Paul Jewson used to live.  Jewson is an ex River Cafe alumni which shows in Fitzrovia’s ethos of top quality produce served simply and honestly…
